Common Core Standards for Cardboard Challenge


Grade 4

English Language Arts


Reading
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
    • The “Caine’s Arcade” video will serve as a multimedia text and students will discuss, respond to questions, and examine the text’s details and examples.

Writing
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
    • Students will compose blog posts that explain their design process, their progress, and their reflections on learning.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2a Introduce a topic clearly and group related information in paragraphs and sections; include formatting (e.g., headings), illustrations, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
    • Student blog posts will structure their blog posts to include complete paragraphs, pictures and video

    • Student documentaries and Cardboard Challenge Night
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.5 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
    • Students will post numerous videos and pictures of their progress and learning as they go.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
    • Posts will be revised and edited to meet conventions.  Formal presentation language will be stressed during Cardboard Challenge Night.

Math

Math - Measurement and Data
  • CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.A.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
    • Numerous opportunities for applied mathematics will be exploited throughout the project.  (Ex.  1$ gets you 4 plays.  A fun pass, worth 500 plays, costs 2$.  How much does each play on a fun pass cost?)
